US accuses Nicolas Maduro and his wife of narco-terrorism and cocaine smuggling

US authorities have announced charges against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his spouse, Cilia Flores. According to US Attorney General Pam Bondi, they are charged with narco-terrorism, cocaine smuggling, weapons possession, and participation in a conspiracy aimed at obtaining machine guns and explosive devices for use against the United States. This was reported by podrobno.uzreports.

The charges were filed in the Southern District of New York. Bondi said the couple will soon answer “on American soil, in American courts, before the full force of US justice.”

She also thanked President Donald Trump for his firm stance on accountability and noted that the US armed forces successfully carried out an operation to detain Maduro and Flores. The US side is describing the case as one of the largest international arrests of suspected drug traffickers.

As a reminder, on the night of January 3, reports circulated that the US struck several sites in Caracas, Venezuela’s capital, including an air base and military bases. Donald Trump confirmed a “large-scale operation,” stating that Nicolas Maduro and his wife had been detained and taken out of the country.

The European Union said it is closely monitoring developments and noted it is maintaining its previous position that Maduro’s government lacks sufficient legitimacy.
