In South Korea, former president Yoon was sentenced to life imprisonment

On February 19, 2026, a Seoul Central District Court in South Korea sentenced former President Yoon Suk Yeol to life imprisonment on charges of "leading the rebellion" and abuse of power related to the December 2024 short-term military operation.

According to Reuters and AP, prosecutors requested the death penalty, but the court applied life imprisonment (in some reports "with labor"). The court assessed this case as a serious threat to the constitutional order, since, according to the decision, at that time there was an attempt to exert pressure on parliament, obstruct political opponents, and "paralyze" state institutions.

The indictment mentions episodes such as sending troops and police around the parliament to obstruct deputies' vote to overturn the decision, as well as attempting to arrange the arrest of certain political figures. It is noted that this situation in 2024 was canceled by parliament within a few hours, after which impeachment proceedings were launched one after another.
