Sweden to supply Gripen fighter jets to Ukraine

Military-political cooperation and defense relations on the European continent have reached a new, unprecedented stage. On May 28 of this year, during Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's official visit to the Kingdom of Sweden, a historic and global agreement was reached between the two countries on protecting airspace.
According to information provided by the Swedish government and official circles, this new agreement will serve to fundamentally modernize Kyiv's air defense capabilities and military aviation fleet. We provide you with detailed information and historical figures regarding this multi-billion dollar military contract, which is at the center of global attention.
Both purchase and free aid: Gripen jets will take to the skies
At the conclusion of the meeting between the two heads of state, a major bilateral plan was announced to provide the Ukrainian Air Force with modern fighter jets:
Prospective purchase: Using special credit funds allocated by the European Union, 2.5 billion euros Ukraine will purchase up to 20 of the latest and most modern modifications of Sweden's famous Gripen fighter jets. Delivery of these new-generation aircraft is expected to begin in 2030.
Free military aid: Until the new ones are ready, the Kingdom of Sweden will provide Ukraine with 16 Gripen jets completely free of charge from its own arsenal.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson specifically noted that the process of handing over these free fighter jets to Kyiv will begin in early 2027.
Stockholm's historic decision and Zelenskyy's hopes
The head of the Swedish government assessed this defense contract as one of the largest and most important steps in his country's history. In his opinion, these aircraft can become the foundation for reliably protecting the Ukrainian sky.
In turn, Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy touched upon the framework agreement signed between the two countries in October 2025. The President did not hide his great hope for the gradual purchase of all 150 fighter jets envisaged under this program.
Billions of euros in aid
Today, Sweden is one of the main partner countries in the world providing the most and most systematic military-technical assistance to Ukraine.
According to official statistics, since the beginning of the large-scale military operations conducted by Russia, Stockholm has allocated a total of nearly 12 billion euros in major military and strategic aid to the Kyiv administration. This aviation contract is the logical and highest peak of this cooperation. We will continue to monitor such dramatic changes in the political and military arena.
