Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that he did not expect the United States to impose strict restrictions on major oil giants such as LUKOIL and Rosneft. He emphasized that this decision by the White House is difficult to explain, as no serious conflict or open confrontation has been observed between the two countries since the Alaska negotiations.
Putin made this statement at a press conference during his visit to Kyrgyzstan. According to the president, during the negotiations in Ankara, Moscow and Washington were optimistic about the possibility of limiting military actions and reaching certain agreements on security issues.
"During the negotiations, we seemed to find a point of mutual understanding between the two sides. We thought that a common position had been formed in the anchorage area. But meanwhile, without any warning, the United States imposed sanctions. To be honest, this incident was incomprehensible even to me," Putin said.
In October, the US Treasury Department imposed comprehensive sanctions against LUKOIL and Rosneft, as well as a number of their subsidiaries. The restrictions include freezing all assets of companies in the US, as well as a strict ban on any business relations with American legal entities and individuals.
After the announcement of the restrictions, LUKOIL announced that it was looking for potential buyers to sell its foreign assets. At the same time, the analysis provided by the Bank of Russia noted that the price of Russian Urals oil fell by up to 23% in November compared to Brent, which indicates the pressure of sanctions and the unstable situation in the market.
According to experts, this step by Washington could usher in a new stage in geopolitical processes and create even more serious coldness in Moscow-Washington relations.
