Russia national team head coach Valery Karpin responded to claims that the national side lacks a stable “core.” This was reported by euro-football.rureports.
According to the specialist, 30–40 players are currently being considered as candidates for the national team. At the same time, he stressed that ideally he would like the shortlist in focus to be expanded to as many as 60 players.
“Candidates are one thing, but the number of players who stay healthy throughout the year and are called up for every camp is another. If you look at it, you’ll see a core of 20 players,” Karpin was quoted as saying by Match TV.
Karpin added that new players will periodically join the main group: for example, if someone gets injured, the squad will change. In his view, under the current conditions it is necessary to test as many players as possible, and in friendlies they should not limit themselves to just 12–13 players.
