Real Sociedad, hovering around the lower places in La Liga, gave Atletico plenty of headaches in Sunday’s match and ultimately shared the points with the Madrid side. This was reported by euro-football.rureports.
In the opening minutes, Atletico created a dangerous chance from a corner: after Koke’s delivery there was a headed flick-on, and Julian Alvarez, in a good position, narrowly failed to hit the target. The hosts responded as well: Oyarzabal accelerated the attack down the left and found Brais Mendez for a shot, but the goalkeeper saved his long-range effort.
Later, Takefusa Kubo burst into the box and laid the ball off to Oyarzabal, but after a slight deflection the ball went past the post. Atletico also stepped up the pressure several times: Goncalo Guedes took a shot, and Carlos Soler redirected the ball in front of goal, but everything went straight to the goalkeeper. From one set piece, in an episode involving Sorloth, it looked as if the ball had gone into the net off a defender, but offside was given.
Early in the second half, the Madrid side opened the scoring: in the 50th minute, Giuliano Simeone delivered a superb cross from the right, and Alexander Sorloth, left unmarked at the far post, headed home accurately — 0:1. Atletico threatened again on a quick break, but Conor Gallagher’s shot went wide of the post.
Real Sociedad responded quickly: Kubo drove into the penalty area and squared it to the middle, and Guedes from around 10 metres fired precisely into the top-left corner to restore parity — 1:1. In the end, Atletico tried to snatch the win: Antoine Griezmann went one-on-one and attempted a chip, but the goalkeeper raised his hands and saved it.
After the draw, Real Sociedad are joint 15th in the table and sit two points above the relegation zone. Atletico, meanwhile, are joint third. Arsen Zakharyan came on as a substitute in the 89th minute.
