EU-Central Asia summit is taking place in Samarkand

EU-Central Asia summit is taking place in Samarkand
The European Union and Central Asia are officially elevating their ties to a strategic partnership, UzA reported. Today, April 4, two major events will take place in Samarkand — the launch of the “Team Europe” initiative and a climate forum involving regional presidents.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is expected to announce the “Team Europe” program, which will enable financing for water, energy, and environmental projects in Central Asia.

The summit comes at a time of growing integration and cooperation among Central Asian countries, with border disputes resolved and the U.S. shifting its strategic position on the Ukraine war.

On April 3, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev held bilateral talks with visiting presidents. One of the summit’s main outcomes will be the signing of the Samarkand Declaration, officially establishing strategic ties between the EU and Central Asia.

According to von der Leyen, “Team Europe” is a donor initiative prioritizing water, energy, and ecological projects. The EU views the summit as part of its broader strategy to diversify trade amid U.S. tariff policies.

While China and Russia have been the region’s traditional digital partners, the EU now positions itself as a new strategic direction for Central Asia.

The summit will also cover trade, logistics, security, and Afghanistan’s integration into the global community. Trade between Uzbekistan and the EU has surpassed 6 billion euros. Since gaining GSP+ status, Uzbekistan’s exports to Europe have quadrupled. Major projects in green energy and infrastructure are underway with the involvement of European companies.
