Learn about your body's "protectors" - antioxidants

Antioxidants are compounds that protect our body from the negative effects of harmful molecules called "free radicals." Free radicals can damage cells and cause various diseases. This process is called "oxidative stress."

Antioxidants are important for human health, as they help reduce such harm. They are naturally found in certain fruits, vegetables, grains, and nuts.

Common antioxidants include:

  • Vitamin C: lemon, orange, green vegetables, strawberry, red pepper.
  • Vitamin E: almonds, nuts, seeds, spinach, sweet potatoes.
  • Carotenoids: vegetables such as carrots, pumpkin, spinach.
  • Selenium: nuts, seeds, beef and turkey.
  • Flavonoids: tea, coffee, red wine, fruits, vegetables, chocolate.
  • Likopen: tomato, watermelon, papaya.

Antioxidants play an important role in the prevention of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, aging, and other diseases.
